[Tater, Norwich mascot]Professional baseball came to Norwich in 1995 with the arrival of the Norwich Navigators, the Yankees' AA farm club. The franchise had been in Albany-Colonie, NY, for some time. The last time Norwich fielded a minor league team was in 1910 in the short-lived Connecticut League.

The team is owned by Minor League Sports Enterprises; Brian Mahoney is the general manager. Lou Mazzilli will manage the Navigators in 1999, his first year at the helm of the Navigators. His coaching staff includes Arnie Beyler, Tom Filer, and Carl Randolph. Trey Hillman, who had managed the Navigators over the last two seasons, moves up to the Yankees' Triple-A team in Columbus, Ohio.

All Navigators games will be broadcast in 1999 on WSUB 980 AM. The team also maintains a Web site which includes team, schedule and stadium information as well as a catalog of team merchandise, along with a variety of related information.

[Dodd Stadium, Norwich]The Norwich Navigators play in Senator Thomas J. Dodd Memorial Stadium, located in a business park near I-395. The state-of-the-art facility, which cost an estimated $9 million, was completed just before the beginning of the 1995 season. The stadium features a large scoreboard capable of video instant replays, a first for a minor league stadium, according to the team.

[Dodd Stadium diamond]Fans sitting in premium box seats up front can take advantage of amentities like cupholders and can avoid trips to the concession stands by ordering from a waitress.

The stadium has short foul lines, with the left and right field foul poles only 309 feet from home plate. The field curves out sharply, though, and center field is 401 feet away. One change for 1999 is that the bullpens have been moved back into the embankments down the left- and right-field foul lines.

Directions: From I-395 take Exit 82. Norwich Industrial Park and Dodd Stadium are clearly signed and easy to find off the highway. Note that the stadium is located in the middle of a rambling business park and is linked only by a two-lane road. This often causes traffic congestion when leaving the park at the end of the game, although for games with attendance of over 4,000, the road is turned into a one-way, two-lane exit road. Parking is available at the park for over 2,000 cars, and this year parking is free. You can use this map to help you get to the park.

Tickets: Ticket prices are unchanged from 1998: Premium Box seats are $9, reserved seats are $7, general admission is $6 ($4.50 for children and seniors).

Other Costs: (1998)
Hot Dogs: $1.75 and $2.50
Pretzels: $2.00
Popcorn: $1.50 and $3.25
Pizza: $2.50
Soda: $1.50, $2.00 and $3.50
